Paul Colin
Le Tumulte Noir
Pochoir
SOLD
Plate 12, from the original 1929 portfolio 'Le Tumulte Noir'(The Black Craze)in hommage to Josephine Baker. With the wild popularity of Josephine Baker, the acclaimed poster artist Paul Colin mounted a spectacular event in 1927 called the Bal Negre, which was attended by 3,000 Parisiens. This success, followed by the explosive popularity of Baker-inspired music and dance, led Colin to re-create the Jazz-Age mood of 'Le Tumulte Noir'. The audacious dance forms, bold colours and rhythm seemed to jump off the pages, making these images among the most evocative of the Art Deco age. From the original edition of 520 (500 were unnumbered), signed in the plate, lower right. The bold primary colours were applied by pochoir master Jean Saude. Overall size H18.5in X W12.5in; H47.0cm X W31.75cm
