Botanical
Juni-Hitoe #86
Watercolour
SOLD
Hand Painted Woodblock print on rice paper. From Japan c.1880, part of a series of blooms that constituted a pictorial catalogue to introduce horticulturists of the Western world to new or unfamiliar Eastern species. These "albums" were carried by botanical salesmen from one store to the next to demonstrate the varieties possible. The delicate hand-made textured paper contains powdered mica, which gives a subtle iridescence to the work. Each image carries the ink-stamped species identification, top center. Overall h.15.375 X w.10.75; h.39.1cm X w.27.3cm (N.B. Scan does not show entire piece, which can be framed as displayed here or with labelling and approx. double the amount of foliage shown.)
