Hand Painted Woodblock print on rice paper. From Japan c.1880, part of a series of blooms that constituted a pictoral catalogue to introduce horticultualists of the Western world to new Eastern species. The delicate hand-made paper contains powdered mica, which gives a subtle iridescence to the work. Ink-stamped species identification, top center: "No.40 SHIGURE-MOMIJI" Overall h.15.375 X w.10.75; h.39.1cm X w.27.3cm (N.B. Scan does not show entire piece, which can be framed as displayed here or with stamped labelling and approx. double the amount of foliage shown.)
