De La Fumee
Pochoir
Hand-painted pochoir print by Ernesto Michaelles (1893-1959), who produced sculpture, paintings, fabric designs, theatrical costumes and fashion illustrations under the pseudonym "THAYAHT". Michaelles, fascinated with applying his study of dynamic symmetry (Paris and Harvard) to the arts, created his hallmark style by combining the geometrics of cubism with the Art Deco curvilinear style - the achievement of swirling motion and "tobacco-liberated" elegance all in one go! 'FUMEE', in the hand-colored pochoir technique, appeared as Plate #13 in issue #2 from the 1922 Gazette du Bon Ton. Perhaps the most famous cubist pochoir image, this one was chosen for the cover of "French Fashions of Good Taste: Pochoir Illustrations: 1920-1922" published by Schiffer (1998). Rich gouache painterly effect on crème heavy laid artist's paper.H 9.5in X W 7.5in; H 24.1cm X W 19.1cm
