Charles Martin
La Morte d'Amour
Pochoir
From the Gazette du Bon Ton, 1920, issue #10, Planche 72 and Charles Martin's famous Torquate Suite. Martin (1848-1934) illustrated for Gazette throughout its entire publishing history (1912-1925) as well as for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. A precursor of 12st C. "shock effect" advertising, with the haute couture outfit displayed on a woman floating downstream. The Art Deco period was an exciting, fast moving era of innovation and breaking taboos, putting a whole new daring perspective on things: "Anything goes" as they would say. h.9.75in X w.7.25in; h.24.8cm X w.18.4cm
