George Barbier
La Joueuse De Theorbe
This is a hand-colored pochoir produced as Plate #18 of the Gazette du Bon Ton No.2 (Feb. 1914). One of the most sought-after Barbier images - great silvering on the music stand and bodice, and exacting attention to detail and colouring. Here Barbier gives credit to 2 of the major influences in defining Art Deco: The rich ornamentation of the Oriental counterpoised against the stark geometric. The artist experiments here with perspective as shown in the near 3-D effect of her gown spilling out and over the margin. H 9.125in X W 7.125in H 23.2cm X W 18.1cm
